(September 2006) – The Oldham County Arts Association is proud to announce that the Great Escape Oldham 8 in La Grange, Ky., will be the exclusive host for this year’s Bluegrass Independent Film Festival. The films selected from more than 200 submissions by independent film makers around the world can now all be enjoyed in the comfort of Great Escape Oldham 8’s fully equipped theaters.
The festival’s new director, Tamara Lee Fulkerson, a freelance make-up artist and the Kentucky Make-up Steward for I.A.T.S.E. 798 in New York, is leading this event, which is rapidly becoming one of the largest southern film festivals.

Film Guide

The festival, which runs from Friday, Sept. 8, through Sunday, Sept. 10, is dedicated to the great filmmaker D.W. Griffith. Griffith, a native of Oldham County who was born in La Grange and buried in Centerfield, developed some of the earliest techniques in cinematography. Griffith, called “the father of film” by Charlie Chaplin, was one of Hollywood’s most innovative directors.

“We are very excited about the Oldham 8 venue, and believe La Grange is the ideal place for a film festival that brings fresh, independent and aspiring talent from across the globe,” Fulkerson said.
“Excellent! Entertaining! Thought-provoking! Moving! These are just a few of the adjectives I’ve used to describe the film festival,” lauded State Sen. Ernie Harris, an Oldham County resident.
Many thanks go to another Oldham County resident, famed three-time Kentucky Derby poster artist, Sonny Whittle, for creating the new logo for the 2006 Bluegrass Independent Film Festival.
Whittle has created three Derby posters in the past 20 years. His designs are among the top sellers in the history of the poster series. He jokingly said this is because “people like them.”
And the Oldham County Arts Association loves its new festival logo and would like to sincerely thank him for his creative contribution to this year’s festival.

The festival will showcase independent films from eight different categories: Features, Shorts, Documentaries, Comedies, Foreign, Animation-Claymation, Best Student Filmmaker and Best Regional Filmmaker.
Audiences will join a panel of judges to view and vote on the films and will also have the invaluable opportunity to meet some of the filmmakers and ask questions.
The winners in each film category will receive cash awards and plaques.

The festival allows Oldham County to show off its beautiful rural settings as well as its southern hospitality. Social venues include Yew Dell Gardens and Waldeck Mansion in Crestwood, and Irish Rover Too in La Grange.
