Oldham County Singers to mark
15th anniversary with concert

They will perform May 16
at Oldham Schools Arts Center

CRESTWOOD, Ky. (May 2014) – The Oldham County Singers provide a community service through their music wherever they perform. Whether its patriotic, spiritual or traditional choral music, their blending sounds captivate listeners and uplift their spirits.
“Historically, we’ve tried to provide a holiday performance and a spring concert,” said Octa Kellond, performance chair. “Our goal has always been to bring the choral arts to Oldham County.”
The group was originally founded in the late 1990s in Pewee Valley as the Little Colonel Singers and retains three of its original members.

The Oldham County Singers are scheduled to perform their 15th anniversary concert, “Come to the Music!” on Friday, May 16, in the Performance Hall of the Oldham County Schools Arts Center, 7105 Old Floydsburg Rd. in Crestwood. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors (60 and over) and students.
The title of the concert comes from “the title of a song that we’ve been performing for some time by Joseph Martin,” Kellond said. “The opening lines are ‘Celebrate! Celebrate!’ which is what we are doing.” The chorus will perform a few spirituals, madrigals, ballads and Broadway tunes.
The concert will last about one hour or a little longer, with an intermission. The group will be joined by the Kammerer Middle School Choir, which will also do a couple of numbers on their own.
The Oldham County Singers’ director, Melissa Weaver, also directs this middle school choir. Since becoming the Oldham County Singers Director in September 2013, Weaver “has brought a delightful, refreshing new direction to our community chorus,” Kellond said.
Weaver graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in music. She went on to earn her master’s degree in Music Education at Morehead State University, where she was a Fulbright Scholarship recipient.
A reception will follow the concert. Organizers are trying to incorporate an art display to go along with the concert. Artists from Gallery 104 in La Grange have been invited to display one piece of artwork in the lobby of the Performance Hall.
“Adding visual arts in the lobby during our choral concert brings a nice added touch for our audience to enjoy,” she said. The Oldham County Singers joined the Arts Association of Oldham County in November 2013, becoming the first performing arts member to join the association. The art club maintains Gallery 104 on Main Street in La Grange.
The Oldham County Singers will have 15 active singing members at this concert and be joined by supplemental musicians. They are always looking for new members. “We want to build our choir and double our size this year,” said Kellond.
The group performs by contract at various venues around the county. “We’re available for weddings, to sing Amazing Grace at funerals, civic ceremonies or to sing the National Anthem at political rallies,” Kellond said.
For St. Patrick’s Day, the group recently performed an Irish a capella for Magnolia Springs Assisted Living. On a few non-a capella songs, the group was accompanied by an auto harp, played by one of the members.
The Oldham County Singers can provide a program even when the entire choir cannot perform. A women’s group, Aca Belles, was formed earlier this year. This smaller group provides for “a more flexible performance in a variety of venues,” she said. It performed at the Oldham County Chamber of Commerce’s Showcase Luncheon in March.
The chorus rehearses nearly every Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Oldham County Schools Arts Center.
