Longtime Belle employee Engstrom to speak at Carnegie Center for Art

She will discuss the boat’s unique history

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (October 2014) – Kadie Engstrom, Education Coordinator for the Belle of Louisville, will present the program “Rolling on the River: 100 Years with the Belle,” as part of the Belle of Louisville’s 100th birthday celebration in October. She will present the program from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany, Ind. The center is located at 201 E. Spring St.

Her presentation will include the overall history of the Belle as she celebrates her 100th birthday, and general information about the Ohio River and the steamboat industry. Engstrom’s passion for the Belle is exceeded only by her ability to think creatively during the question-and-answer period following the presentation. 
The Carnegie Center will have items from our own collection relating to New Albany’s steamboat history on display for attendees to view, including a table from the steamboat the Baltic and a portrait of the Baltic’s Capt. Charles H. Meekin.

Engstrom has worked with the Belle in several capacities since 1972, and has been Education Coordinator since 1992. She has written books, articles, brochures and other resources concerning community history, steamboats, Ohio River history, the Belle’s history and the history of Life-Saving Station No. 10. In addition, she has developed and facilitated educational experiences for children and adults, community presentations and exhibits, classroom and on-board programs for students, workshops for teachers, and informational on-board narrations on both the Belle of Louisville and her sister boat, the Spirit of Jefferson.
