Madison Art Club seeks entrants
for its 20th annual art show

Last year’s winner Bryant teaches art
at Preston Art Center

(October 2018) – When a visitor goes to the New Albany, Ind., home of Joyce Sweet Bryant for the first time, it is like a visit to an art museum or gallery. Bryant will take the visitor from room to room describing the paintings she has painted and hung on the walls. They are a wide variety of art. There are many family paintings but also wildlife and some slightly abstract works.
Bryant studied art and also teaches at Preston Art Center on Bardstown Road in Louisville, Ky. she graduated in 1960 from the University of Louisville with a bachelor of arts degree with a minor in fine arts and concentration of painting. She also studied fine arts at the University of Miami and Indiana University Southeast. She received additional training with John Michael Carter and Daniel E. Greene.

Joyce Sweet Bryant won last year’s Best of Show with the painting hanging on the wall behind her in this photo.

Bryant has had exhibits at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville and the Floyd County, Ind., Museum, as well as at several galleries. She has also won many awards and going to put a painting in the show,” she said. “Linda Wood, one of my students, asked if I wanted her to take a couple of paintings off the wall to enter. So she did. I wanted to split the prize money, but she said no but accepted a small painting I had done.”
The club is now accepting entries for this year’s 20th annual show. The first show was held at the Madison-Jefferson County Public Library because the Madison Art Club did not yet have a building. There were 30 entries that year. Eighty are expected this year.
The show is a major fundraiser for the Madison Art Club, and this year the club has received more than $8,000 in fees, topping the $7,000 earned last year. Half of the money will go to awards.
There is a $1,000 award for best of show, a $500 award of excellence, and a $250 Duke Energy Award of Distinction. There are also individual awards in categories.
The Madison Art Club is proud to have secured Kim Krause to serve as show judge for the competition this year. They have been after him for several years and succeeded this year because he retired from his position as professor of art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. He was senior vice president for academic affairs. He attended Birkbeck College at the University of London, England. He received his BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and MFA from Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College in New York. He has also held several Artist in Residences positions, including Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida and Rathausgalerie in Munich, Germany, The Cooper Union in New York, and the Chateau in Rochefort, France.
Krause has had paintings exhibited in more than 140 exhibitions around the world, including 15 solo exhibitions.
Mercedez Morgan, a senior majoring in art at Hanover College, has done much of the leg work for the Fall Show, including delivering material to local businesses and producing a PowerPoint presentation on Madison Art Club that will be shown at the open house. She is serving as summer intern at the Madison Art Club as a requirement of the business Scholars Program. She spent the summer working 26-hour weeks at the gallery.
“The internship is good for me because I needed to see how galleries function,” she said. “I also needed to see how exhibits are organized.”
Deadline for entry forms is Sept. 28, but delivery of the artwork is scheduled for Oct. 6-7. Entry forms will be accepted with artwork at that time.
Entrants may enter up to two works in the following categories: drawing, fiber art, painting, photography, three-dimensional, artisan or wild card. Category descriptions are on the entry form.
Three-dimensional is a new category this year and includes free-standing art of any category.
