Cash prizes are awarded to winners
of various categories

(June 2019) – There are so many different types of events that happen this summer in Madison, Ind., that makes the town thrive with jubilant people. Visitors travel from all over for well-known events such as the Madison Chautauqua or Madison Regatta, but this relatively new event, Rollin’ on the River,” starting just last year, is a must see.

Rollin’ on the River is a parade hosted by the Jefferson County United Way where people can register their carts (golf carts, UTV, ATV, etc.) and decorate them in the theme of Rollin’ on the River in hopes to win one of the cash prizes. This event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, June 21, on Vaughn Drive along the Ohio River. The lineup starts at the bridge, so it is suggested to get there at 6 p.m. The parade will end at Bicentennial Park, where people can purchase tickets for just one dollar to vote for their favorite cart.
“The decoration theme people seem to be a little confused about,” said Sheila Coffin, executive director of Jefferson County United Way. “It’s Rollin’ on the River, so anything to do with wheels rolling with the river town. They will just have to use their imagination.”
The winners will be announced at Bicentennial Park during Mayor’s Movie in the Park, which will be featuring “Mary Poppins Returns.” Prizes consist of “Most Enthusiastic” and “Best Themes,” which all win a cash prize of $300. The last award, “People’s Choice,” will win a $200 Cunningham Golf Cars Gift card. All proceeds go to benefit Jefferson County United Way.
The Jefferson County United way supports 11 different agencies: American Red Cross, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Boy Scouts of America – Hoosier Trials Council, La Casa Amiga, Girls, Inc., Lide White Boys and Girls Club, Lifetime Resources, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Salvation Army, Safe Passage and USO of Indiana.

Golf cart parade participants use their imagination to decorate their rides for the “Rolling on the River” event.

“You to have to have a driver’s license or be 16 years old, have insurance on the vehicle and sign a waiver the city requires,” Coffin said. “Other than that, there aren’t any requirements.”
“Anything with wheels really would work,” said Gail Ray, committee chair for Rollin’ on the River. “Some of the agencies want to pull a wagon or just march in it or something. We are fine with that. Last year, we had some guy who didn’t even decorate his cart; he just drove with his four dogs sitting in it. People just like to be in it because it is fun and whimsical. They don’t care about decorating it. They just want to be in it.”
There will also be food tents down by Bicentennial Park that will provide, hot dogs, snacks, dessert and a drink for $4. There is also supposed to be a Kona Ice truck down there as well. During the parade, there will be a judges stand where the carts will get to stop and the judges can decide if they want to vote on that cart or not, especially for “Most Enthusiastic.”
“We want them to act out, act silly and try to win one of those prizes,” Ray said.
The People’s Choice Award is a perfect way to support friends and family and the community through the parade by voting for a favorite cart. Last year, Blush on Main won the People’s Choice Award and generously donated its winnings back to the United Way.
“We really want to emphasize how generous our sponsors are to us,” Ray said. “The people in our county and the companies themselves are very generous with United Way, so this is something to make a little extra money for our agencies.”

If registering for this event before June 7, the fee is only $20. After that date, the price goes up to $25.
