(June 2009) – Monday, June 8, has been declared
Arts Day as part of the Madison Bicentennial Celebration’s 200-hour
party. From 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., visitors and residents will find a variety
of activities to do that center around the arts.
Events will be held along the riverfront, Bicentennial Park and West
Street running from the river to Third Street but not blocking Main
Street.
A rubbing art historic scavenger hunt, eco-art sculpture for children,
a video game competition, Chinese character drawing, the art of dance,
the art of language, a 15-minute theater performance are just some of
the activities scheduled.
The Rivers Institute at Hanover College will have a photo booth, and
there will be a Harlan Hubbard artwork exhibit, and even sidewalk chalk
mural drawings. The late Hubbard was an artist and author who lived
off the land along the Ohio River in Trimble County, Ky.

As part of the Arts Day program, at 5:30 p.m. the Madison
Chautauqua mural will be unveiled on the side of Rogers Corner, 101
E. Main St. The Madison Chautauqua Festival of Art committee wanted
to give the city a Bicentennial mural to be put in place by summer 2009,
in time for the city’s celebration of its founding.
A competition was held last year in which area artists submitted designs
that have a theme of “historic Madison.” Once the design was
selected, a group of 10 artists produced sections of that design, using
the medium they are comfortable with, to create the whole art piece.
Each piece was then digitally photographed, enlarged and put on vinyl.
The entire mural will be hung in place in a dedication ceremony in June
2009 and will stay in place for one year.
Music throughout the day on the stage at Bicentennial Park, 150 W. Vaughn
Dr., includes a 6 p.m. performance by John Walburn, Bill Bettler and
Craig Philipp at 7 p.m. and an 8 p.m. performance by folk singers Kriss
Luckett and Greg Ziesemer. The Drumming Circle, a participatory event
in which everyone is invited to join in and beat on some type of percussion
instrument, will close out the evening’s activities at 9 p.m. Everyone
is encouraged to bring lawn chairs. The music events are free.
After dark, at 9:30 p.m. there will be a reception at joeyG’s,
218 E. Main St. in honor of the Bicentennial Art Exhibit on display
there. Roy Gentry will perform.
