Construction of pedestrian tunnel
Workers must finish project by
(March 2012) Construction is under way at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky., where track officials are installing additional parking lot and a 42-foot-wide pedestrian tunnel under Hwy. 35. Winter temperatures have been more than kind to crews working on the $10 million project. Speedway Motorsports Inc. purchased 160 acres of land to build the additional parking in response to the logjam that occurred at last years inaugural NASCAR Sprint Cup race.
The new addition is expected to double the parking capacity to nearly 35,000 vehicles. The tunnel is designed to safely move 8,000-10,000 people from the east side of Hwy. 35 into the facility.
