Great River Paint Out
Louisville’s
Dunbar among artists
to paint at "The Point" during
River's Institute event

(September 2007) – Artists of every age and
caliber and fans of art and the outdoors are invited to the Great River
Paint Out at Hanover College on Sept. 15-16. The inaugural Paint Out
was held in 2005, and there are plans to continue the program every
other year, according to organizers at the Rivers Institute at Hanover
College.
Nearly 100 artists participated and more than $7,000 was raised in sales
of pieces made during the first event, officials said.

Lynn Dunbar, an artist from Louisville, Ky., participated
in the 2005 Paint Out, and she is returning this year.
“The scenery around Hanover is stunning,” she said.
The people at the event, along with the surrounding area and Clifty
Falls State Park are what she looks forward to the most about this year’s
Paint Out, she added.
Dunbar did not start her career as an artist. After several years in
the advertising industry, she went back to school at the University
of Louisville to get her master’s degree in art therapy.
“I took a course in oil painting and developed quite a passion
for it,” she said.
Dunbar received her master’s degree in social work instead of art
therapy, but she continued painting after she left school.
“I am so thankful for my painting because it helped me during the
illness and passing of my son to childhood cancer,” Dunbar said.
After her class at U of L, oil remained her favorite medium to use while
painting.
“I love the juiciness and the lush colors of oil paint,” she
said. “Oil is very intriguing because it can become a different
animal by mixing the colors right on the canvas.”
Oil may fuel her creativity, but nature is what inspires her, Dunbar
said.
“Each painting gives me a feeling of the day that I painted it,
and I try to share this with the viewer,” she said. “Nature
and being out-of-doors is my mantra.”
Dunbar will get the chance to paint in nature again at this year’s
Paint Out.
The initial idea of having the Paint Out belonged to Rick Bennett, assistant
professor of art at Hanover College. But many other people and the Rivers
Institute at the college helped him, he said.
“The main idea is to bring people to campus to enjoy its natural
setting,” Bennett said. “I’ve been painting at Hanover
College for about 10 years. I thought if artists knew about campus,
they’d want to come here and paint.”
Bennett said he expected about the same number of people to take part
in the program this year as in 2005, depending on the weather. Registration
is free and begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at The Point on the
Hanover campus. All participants will receive a free T-shirt. The exhibition
and sale of the pieces will be on Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. The show
is an opportunity to meet the artists and see the recipient of the People’s
Choice Award by the Madison Art Club. Winners receive cash awards.
This will also be the time to attend the book signing of “Painting
Indiana II, The Changing Face of Agriculture” by several of the
contributing artists, including Dunbar and Hanover artist Bill Borden.
Dunbar will be showing some of her pieces from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept,
14 at Malton Gallery in Cincinnati just before the Paint Out. She also
