(February 2010) – The Boneyard Grill, located at 513 Clifty Dr., on the hilltop in the Clifty Plaza, is a new family friendly, full-service restaurant that opened in mid-January on weekends only.

The restaurant’s grand opening will be on Sunday, Feb. 7, just in time for fans to gather and watch the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl. Party favors will be handed out during the game. After the grand opening, the restaurant will have daily hours that include lunch and dinner options.
“This is not a sports bar,” said Christian Hanson, who along with wife, Trina, and Charlie and Nancy Grooms opened the restaurant. “The Boneyard Grill is a place where you can bring your family, get a great meal, drink a beer if you want and watch television.”
Hanson said the restaurant is an accumulation of years of dreaming and planning by all of the owners. “We talked about this for years, and we finally decided to look at properties,” he said. “We thought this one was ideal because of its location and parking accommodations.”
The grill’s specialty will be its flame broiled wings and rib tips, although a full menu will feature a variety of other delights. “Of course, we will be serving our famous Ladder 51 flame broiled wings,” said Nancy Grooms, who introduced the non-fried wings to the nation several years ago through the QVC Network. Her company ships the wings daily to customers throughout the country. They are lower in calories than other wings because of the way they are prepared, Grooms says. The product is also available locally through Kroger Co.
“We do not deep fry at the Boneyard,” she explained. Instead, the restaurant employs a technologically advanced Impinger oven, which uses hot air under pressure to surround the food with small jets of hot air. This allows for rapid heating, cooking, baking and crisping of foods.
Grooms said menu items will include pizzas made from scratch, wraps, sandwiches and dinner selections. “We try to use all locally grown and produced items in our restaurant,” she said. “We definitely want to support our community.”
The trendy, upscale décor features comfortable seating that can hold up to 130 people. The restaurant capacity is 200, so the restaurant has plenty of space to accommodate large corporate or social events, said Hanson.
The warm, earth-toned walls are adorned with pictures of local scenes and local sports paraphernalia, including a part of the Oh Boy! Oberto Miss Madison, hang from the ceiling.
There are high-definition televisions spaced artfully throughout the restaurant. “If groups want to come in and watch ‘The Biggest Loser,’ ‘American Idol’ or other television programs, then we welcome them,” he said. “We are here to serve our guests.”
One centerpiece of the décor is a hand-crafted Maplewood bar where individuals or groups can sit, chat and catch a view of the grill line or watch television. Hanson carefully designed and built the bar, shaped like a putting green, in his garage.
The kitchen area, in full view of restaurants guests, is separated by a half-brick wall and glass. Guests will be able to watch cooks prepare their food on the large cast iron grill that compliments the décor of the facility.
“This is definitely going to be the place to be during the Madison Regatta,” said Charlie Grooms, who is also the team manager for the Oh Boy! Oberto Miss Madison. “Everyone who is anyone will be in here eating and having a good time.”
