MADISON, Ind. (Aug. 16, 2008) – It may sound hard to believe, but the person who added the winning touch to clinch this year's Grand Champion barbecue trophy at the Madison Ribberfest did not even attend the event. Marla Twyford was several hundred miles away at home in Jacksonville, Ill., and could not make the trip because she had to work.
But she prepared and packed her special sauce that husband, Randy, used to serve up his delicious meats and convince the judges that the couple deserved the 2008 pro cooking title.
"She pre-made the sauce, came up with the objectives and the marinades," said Randy Twyford, 48, after hauling the wooden trophy back to his cooking trailer Aug. 16.

The Kansas City Barbeque Society, with more than 6,000 members worldwide, is the world’s largest organization of barbecue and grilling enthusiasts.

Twyford had plenty of help in cooking and preparing his judged entries over the two-day event in Madison, Ind. Twyford, along with Zach and Kelly Schneider, make up the team dubbed Ulcer Acres. They have been at this for four years and have enjoyed considerable success.
They recently won the Grand Champion trophy in June at Mt. Vernon, Ill. Three years ago, they were Grand Champions at the competition in Bardwell. They placed second several times.
This was the team's third appearance at the Madison Ribberfest, which is in its seventh year of existence. The team barely edged out second-place finished Double D's BBQ of Hudson, Ohio. The difference was 653.7146 points to Double D's 653.7140 points. In addition to a nice trophy, Ulcer Acres took home a check for nearly $3,000. They also qualified for the KCBS' national competition, the 29th annual American Royal, to be held in October in Kansas City, Mo.
This will be the team's fourth appearance at the American Royal. They have also competed at the Jack Daniels National Invitational competition in Lynchburg, Tenn.

"We are excited to win here because there are some really good teams that compete in Madison," said Twyford.
While the record 56 pro cooking teams competed along the Madison riverfront for money and trophies, the beautiful weekend weather drew perhaps the largest ever crowd to the Blues Bash. Final figures were unavailable at press time on this year's festival attendance. Two hot air balloon races and a balloon glow are also part of the weekend festivities.
On Friday night of the festival, amateur cooking teams took part in the Madison Courier Backyard BBQ Blast. The overall points winner was Pig 'N Boots BBQ of Waterford, Mich.
The Pigmania concrete pig decorating contest went to Artful Living Co.'s "Wilbur the Grill Pig." The "People's Choice Award," selected via money votes, went to Madison Auto Collision's "Bruce Swine, the Dark Knight" batpig.
A children's cooking contest on Saturday produced a winner in two age categories: Gillian Watkins in the age 8-11 contest, and James Quick Jr. in the age 12-15 contest.
