Madison Ribberfest cooking contest

Illinois team takes second place

Big J.T.s Smokin’ BBQ of Columbus, Ind., smoked the competition to capture the Grand Champion trophy and prize money at the Madison Ribberfest’s KCBS pro cooking contest, held Aug. 15-16 in Madison, Ind.

The team is comprised of James Tindell (J.T.) and partner Kempis Wilkerson. They collected their winning points by placing third in chicken, sixth in pork ribs, eighth in beef brisket and second in dessert.
The team, one2bbq, of New Berlin, Ill., earned Reserve Grand Champion, or second place. It is led by Steve Hayden with partner Mike Gillespie. Third place overall went to Frank Denton’s Hug Hogs team from New Palestine, Ind.

In the Kidz “Q” youth cooking contest, 15-year-old Riley Porter of Madison won for the fourth consecutive year in his age group. This was his final year to compete, since he will be too old next year. Porter won the 12-to-15-year-old division, while Jaylin Lee of Madison won the 8-to-11-year-old division.

The Madison Courier Backyard Blast amateur cooking contest does not award overall winners but rather winners in each cooking category.
